American Open University (A-Global), Nigeria, on Thursday officially opened its Global Campus in Ibadan, Oyo State, with a commitment to reshape higher education and bridge the gap between academic qualifications and workplace demands.

The launch, which attracted academics, industry leaders, regulatory agencies and community stakeholders, was themed “Future Forward” and marked what organisers described as the beginning of a new educational model for Nigeria and Africa.

Speaking at the event, President and Founder of the university, Dr. David Seyi Akanbi, said the institution was established to challenge the traditional promise that good grades alone guarantee employment.

“Visions don’t die. Even when the visioners pass on, the dream continues. Today, the dream has come true,” Akanbi said, adding that A-Global was built to “fix the future” of education.

He explained that the university operates a hybrid learning system supported by global technology partnerships, noting that A-Global’s classrooms extend beyond physical walls through collaborations with companies such as Microsoft, Google and Cisco.

“The old promise of ‘go to school, get good grades, get a job’ is broken. We are here to fix that by building a new model that makes the old one obsolete,” he said.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor Francis O. Egbokhare of the University of Ibadan challenged the widespread belief that Nigeria’s education crisis is driven mainly by inadequate funding, arguing instead that inefficiency, waste and poor utilisation of existing resources are the core issues.

He introduced what he described as the “Autarchic–Asymmetric Model for Nigerian Higher Education,” which emphasises self-reliance and disruptive innovation.

According to Egbokhare, the autarchic element focuses on developing local content and resilient infrastructure, while the asymmetric component leverages speed and technology to bypass traditional bottlenecks.
He also advocated a “campus-less campus” approach, where underutilised spaces such as community halls and religious centres can be repurposed as learning hubs.

“Nigeria’s challenge is not a lack of ideas or talent, but a failure of institutional imagination. Higher education must be redesigned for the country we have, not the one we wish we were copying,” he said.
The university received goodwill messages from several regulatory, professional and industry stakeholders.

The Zonal Director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ibadan, Mrs. Temitope Akintola, commended A-Global’s focus on widening access to quality education, while the Academic Director of UniTES CISCO Academy, Mr. Toyin Olatayo, praised the integration of industry certifications into the curriculum.

Professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), welcomed the university’s emphasis on workforce professionalisation.
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, Mr. Akeem Abas, described A-Global’s communication approach as transparent and forward-looking.
Security support was pledged by the Oyo State Police Command through CSP Adegoke A. Dawodu, representing the Commissioner of Police.

Community leaders, including Chief Oladipo Oladosu and Prof. Akin Iwayeni, expressed optimism about the socio-economic impact of the institution on its host community.
The event ended with a tour of the Global Campus and a demonstration of the university’s hybrid learning platforms.
