President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has enough achievements to present to Nigerians as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had recorded significant progress in the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy despite inheriting what he described as a difficult economic situation.
The Senate President spoke on Monday in his Uyo residence while receiving members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund, led by its Chairman, Senator Dandutse Mohammed, on a courtesy visit.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said the Tinubu administration had transformed the country’s economic situation since assuming office.
“The current President has done a lot for Nigerians. He met an economy in shambles. When he came in, 27 states could not pay salaries and pensions, but today, the story has changed because of his reengineering and thinking out of the box,” he said.
Akpabio expressed confidence that Nigerians would re-elect Tinubu in 2027, saying the APC would have substantial achievements to present during the election campaign.
“In 2027, Nigerians will separate the shafts from the grains and re-elect President Tinubu for a second term in office,” he said.
He added that the administration’s achievements would provide the APC with enough material to campaign for the President’s re-election.
“We will have something to tell Nigerians about the unprecedented achievements of Mr President at the campaign grounds. Someone who is challenging him cannot even tell us what he did when he was governor. I can tell you what I did when I was the governor of my state. We will tell them a lot,” Akpabio said.
According to him, opposition parties were aware of the achievements of the Tinubu administration but were reluctant to acknowledge them because of their political position.
“Those in the opposition know too well the achievements of this government in the area of the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy, but because they are in the opposition, they won’t say it,” he said.
Akpabio also commended the 10th Senate for what he described as its giant strides in legislation, promising continued collaboration with the executive to deliver more benefits to Nigerians.
He particularly dismissed the need for lawmakers to be distracted by social media commentary, describing some of the information circulating online as unreliable.
“We don’t need to listen to the social media because it is garbage in, garbage out,” he said.
The Senate President also assured senators who may not return to the 11th Senate that their loyalty to the APC and the President would not go unrewarded, urging them to continue working for the success of the party and the administration.
Earlier, Mohammed said the committee was in Akwa Ibom State to undertake its constitutional responsibilities, including sensitisation and oversight of infrastructure projects executed through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
He commended Akpabio’s leadership of the Senate, saying the 10th Senate had enacted laws with significant benefits to Nigerians.
“Nigerian parents are happy because of NELFUND and TETFund. We are in Akwa Ibom State on sensitisation and oversight on all of the infrastructures executed by TETFund,” Mohammed said.
He described education as fundamental to Nigeria’s development and expressed appreciation for the support provided to the sector through the relevant legislation.
