The 1925 Ibadan Tennis Club, a historic sporting and recreational institution, has commenced its centennial celebrations, marking 100 years of excellence in sports, social life, and community impact. The celebrations, which will span the entire year, were inaugurated with the unveiling of the club’s centennial logo and insignia.
Dr. Oladipupo Sule, President of the Ibadan Tennis Club, highlighted the significance of the milestone, describing it as “a threshold of another century of history” and an opportunity to honor the legacy of past members while laying the foundation for future generations.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary, the club has lined up a series of events, including a Centennial Endowment Luncheon on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The luncheon will serve as a fundraising event for key legacy projects, such as the rehabilitation and modernization of the club’s main hall, expansion of parking space, relocation of the club kitchen, installation of new bath and changing rooms, and the construction of a new badminton hall. A lecture on the influence of financial technology will be delivered by Dr. Ademola Adeleke, Deputy Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
In addition to infrastructural developments, the club will organize various sporting tournaments between May and August, featuring inter-club and interstate competitions. The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Information are expected to play significant roles in supporting and promoting these activities. Furthermore, the club will embark on charity initiatives, partnering with organizations like the Lions Club and Rotary Club to uplift the less privileged.
A major highlight of the centennial celebrations will be the Centennial Dinner in September 2025, during which Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State will be officially invested as the Grand Patron of the club. This tradition follows in the footsteps of past Oyo State leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Major General Abdulkarim Adisa, Alhaji Lam Adesina, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, and Senator Abiola Ajimobi. The dinner will also feature a health and wellness discussion and an awards ceremony to recognize individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the club’s growth.
The club, which has produced state and national champions in tennis and billiards, remains committed to sustaining an environment conducive to recreation, sports, and socialization. As part of its centennial theme, “A Century of Sporting and Recreation Excellence: More Promises to Keep,” the Ibadan Tennis Club aims to build on its rich legacy and continue to be a hub for sports development in Nigeria.
Dr. Sule called on government agencies, corporate bodies, and philanthropists to support the club’s centennial projects, emphasizing that contributions will ensure the club’s legacy for another 100 years.
