The Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka has advised the newly admitted students of the university to shun bad company and be security -conscious, saying the best way to succeed in UI is to be passionately prepared for the intellectual rigour of the institution.
Prof. Olayinka who spoke at the 2018 UI Matriculation Ceremony held at the International Conference Center listed a number of factors that could assist the new students in their academic career, pointing out that success in any race is not determined by the starting point, but by adequate preparation which he described as “the antidote to poor performance”
The UI VC who congratulated the new students on their admission into the university noted that the admission exercise in UI was the most competitive in the country, with only 3,514 of them making it to UI from the initial 53,513 candidates who applied to UI and met the national cutoff point.
“You have attained an uncommon feat by being admitted to UI. I am sure your neighours will now regard you with some measures of respect because this university remains the first and the best university in Nigeria “, Prof. Olayinka stated, adding that the university at all times goes for the best.
To make success out of the uncommon feat therefore, the VC urged the new students to be diligent, focused, avoid cultism and drug abuse, maintaining that since they are no longer under the prying eyes of their parents, they should be more mature in attitude and disposition.
Prof. Olayinka who urged the students to obey the rules and regulations of the university , remarked that they could break records and surpass the achievements of those who had gone before them if only they could be very serious.
In his lecture, the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic IBTC, Dr. Demola Sogunle who is a First Class alumnus of the university challenged the students to have sharp focus, be hard working, and be passionate about success.
Dr. Sogunle advised the students to manage their times efficiently and avoid distractions, stressing that the world respects the best and the outstanding.
