With 2,600 participants, Over 90 games, MTN Champs Begins Tomorrow in Ibadan

2600 athletes will participate in the mtn champ season two scheduled to commence tomorrow 5th April in Ibadan.

The four days track and field event which will end on Monday will feature over 90 games which will be hosted at both Lekan Salami stadium Adamasingba and University of Ibadan Sport Centre.

MTN CHAMPS is a program in Nigeria that aims to unearth and foster athletic talent across the country.

” It is modeled after the Jamaican High school CHAMPS and is poised to become the primary platform for identifying and nurturing promising athletes who could go on to represent Nigeria in prestigious international competitions such as the Olympics and World Championships”

Addressing Journalists in Ibadan today, Bambo Akanni, Founder Making of champions said the number of participants has increased with 600, and the categories has been increased from 3 to 4 .

Akanni who disclosed that 15 of the participants in the season one won medals at the just concluded African game added that 12 of the participants will be taking fo MOC in Lagos for one year training

Expressing satisfaction with the outcome so far, Akanni added that they were encouraged by the positive outcome of the efforts so far and he believe that very soon Nigeria will be the headquarter of athletes in Africa.

“In the next five years you will see Nigerian athletes competing with their counterpart in USA and Jamaica

He acknowledged the support of MTN and other stakeholders for their supports so far

Similarly Mr Idowu Adesokan, Manager Segment and Devices MTN said the service provide company has been sponsoring series of sporting activities in Nigeria and the essence of MTN Champs is to “catch them young”

Both commisisoner for Youth and Sports , Hon Wasilat Adegoke and Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Professor Waheed Adeyemo commended the organizers for bring the event to Oyo state and advocate for a synergy between them and ministries and for effective operations and sports development

Other stakeholders at the event includes 2019 under 20 African Champion Enoch Adegoke, Temitope Akara, Regional Implementation Officer Momo PSP, Coach Deji Aliu, Oba Dairo Jacob Olutayo Mr Sunday Akinosun among others.
