
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday led other dignitaries to receive the body of Senator Barinada Mpigi at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to Wike’s aide on public communication Lere Olayinka, Wike was joined by some of his loyalists, colleagues and friends of the deceases and others to received the corpse
The late lawmaker, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the Senate, died in London on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 64.
Senator Mpigi, who also served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, reportedly passed away after a brief illness. The exact circumstances surrounding his death have not been made public.
Wike had earlier visited the wife and children of the deceased senator in London last Thursday to commiserate with the family and facilitate arrangements for the repatriation of the body to Nigeria.
Describing the late lawmaker as a significant loss to the Ogoni people and the nation at large, Wike said Mpigi was “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even during trying times.”
Tributes have continued to pour in for the late senator, with colleagues and associates recalling his contributions to legislative oversight and infrastructure development during his time in the National Assembly.
