The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday flagged off the Light Up Abuja Project with the installation of integrated hybrid solar street lighting across major districts and expressways in the city.
The project, divided into Lot 1 and Lot 2, will cover strategic areas in the FCT. Lot 1 will cater for Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, Asokoro, and the Airport Expressway, while Lot 2 will focus on Katampe, Katampe Extension, Jabi, Garki, Gudu, and Mabushi.
According to the FCT Administration, the initiative involves the supply and installation of 300W Zolar-powered integrated hybrid solar lighting fittings, with luminous flux ranging from 7,500lm to 17,500lm, on existing streets and expressways. It also includes the provision of galvanized streetlight poles at new sites, as well as replacement of vandalised and damaged poles.
To curb sabotage and ensure sustainability, the new streetlights will be fitted with surveillance modules, while a control room will monitor real-time activities, capturing any attempt at vandalism.
Wike assured that the project will be completed within six months, stressing that the administration is committed to improving security, night-time economy, and overall livability of Abuja.
