The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, themed Gateway Games 2024, was officially declared open on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The event drew dignitaries, athletes, and spectators from across the country to witness the beginning of Nigeria’s foremost sporting competition.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, led the official opening alongside host Governor Dapo Abiodun. In his address, the Vice President praised Ogun State’s commitment to sports development, acknowledging the extensive infrastructure upgrades made in preparation for the event.

Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of the festival in promoting unity and youth engagement. He noted that Ogun State had invested significantly in renovating and expanding sports facilities, including the MKO Abiola Stadium, which now features a modern track, Olympic-sized swimming pool, digital scoreboards, and multiple courts.

“This festival is not just a sporting event—it’s a symbol of our unity, strength, and talent as a nation,” Governor Abiodun said. “We are proud to host the nation and showcase our commitment to excellence.”
