The 1994 Set of Communication and Language Art (CLA) Department, University of Ibadan on Tuesday, commissioned and handed over the refurbished departmental library to the school management.
The N5m naira project was commissioned by the Vice Chancellor of Institution, Professor Kayode Adebowale.
Adebowale who was represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Ezekiel Ayoola commended the ex-students for their contributions towards the advancement of the University.
He said public universities and others rely heavily on support from almuni and grants to survive because government alone cannot fund education.
Ayoola maintained that the support recieved from alumni and others are part of what gave UI an edge and ranked as number one University in Nigeria and Number 7 in Africa adding that “we are hoping go be the first in Africa”.
Similarly, the school Librarian, Dr Helen Komolafe- Opadeji in her brief remark expressed delight in the projects and promised that the facilities will be maintained.
The Dean Faculty of Arts, Professor Olatunji Oyeshile and the Head of Department Communication and Language Arts, Professor Olusola Oyewo in their remarks appreciated the ex-students for remembering their department with such a lofty project
Professor Oyewo said: “The library was locked for sometimes because of its deteriorating condition and now that it has been upgraded. It is now open for students and others.”
He hinted further that some set of people have donated books and some are also working on other projects that will enhance effective study at the department.
While speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor of Oyo state, Mr Taiwo Adisa who was also the spokesperson for the set said, the project was one of the way through which they are paying back and contributing to the department that shapes their carrier.
He said: “This is the library that we all used during our undergraduate and it really helped us, so when we were informed by the immediate past executives of the department about the condition of the library we came to inspect and decided to fix it. We are not only happy that the library is back but that the student will be able to use it.
“We are proud of the department, just recently one of the students just won an award, it’s a pride and an evidence that the value is still there, so we are happy and hoping to do more.”
