Tragedy struck on Sunday as a fire outbreak claimed the lives of SC Kabiru Tijani, a Nigeria Customs officer, his wife, and three of their children at their residence in Ede.
The cause of the inferno, which broke out late in the night, remains unknown. The fire consumed the entire household, leaving only a 13-year-old family member as the lone survivor.
SC Kabiru Tijani and his family have since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
In response to the tragic incident, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, expressed profound sadness and extended his condolences to the bereaved family and the Nigeria Customs Service.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the incident as “touching and painful,” assuring the family of the state’s solidarity during this difficult time.
“I am distraught to hear about the terrible fire incident that resulted in the death of SC Kabiru Tijani, his wife, and three children at his residence in Ede, Osun State. It is really painful for me, and I want to use this avenue to commiserate with the family of the deceased and the Nigeria Customs,” Governor Adeleke said.
The governor also urged residents of the state to prioritize fire safety during the dry season. He called for proper management of electrical appliances and inflammable materials to prevent similar tragedies.
In addition, Governor Adeleke tasked emergency management agencies, including O’Ambulance, to intensify rescue preparedness across the state, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
“It is my prayer that God Almighty reposes their souls and grants their loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the governor added.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the community has been thrown into mourning over the loss of the family.
Similarly, the Customs Area Controller, Dr Ben Oramalugo, on behalf of the Officers and Men of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, deeply commiserate with the family and friends of the deceased.
He further appreciates the prayers and support from the members of the public.
According to a statement signed by Kayode Wey, Superintendent of Customs. Public Relations Officer, Oyo/Osun Command, said SC Kabiru Tijani, served as the Officer in Charge of Operations at the Command, was a dedicated officer.
His unwavering commitment to duty, particularly in coordinating and executing successful anti-smuggling operations, greatly contributed to the success of the Command. His wife, an active member of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) Oyo/Osun Chapter, was equally admired for her contributions to the welfare of the Customs community.
