Four persons were on Monday crushed to death in Erunmu, Egbeda local government area, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
The victims include three students of Idito High School, Erunmu, and the motorcyclist carrying the students.
Although four students and the bike rider were involved in the crash, the only female student on the bike regain consciousness after a rescue operation carried out by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo state Command.
Eyewitness revealed that the 3 students were being transported on a motorcycle popularly called ‘okada’ when the driver of the articulate vehicle in an attempt to avoid hitting an animal by the roadside rammed into them, crushing all 3 students to death.
When contacted, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Oyo state Command, Mrs Uche Winifred Chukwurah said over-speeding on the part of the tipper driver and over-loading on the part of the motorcyclist caused the accident.
Chukwurah said if only the motorcyclist had adhered to the safety precaution of one rider and one passenger, the number of casualty would have been lesser.
She confirmed the number of the people involved in the accident to be six.
She said “We were just called for a rescue and by the point my team got there around 8:45AM, we were able to rescue the victims and took them to the hospital.
“Initially, they though the five of them (on the bike) were dead but by the time they got to the hospital, the female among them regained consciousness.
“Meanwhile, I understand that the victims were students of Idito High School, after the accident, the students took the laws into the hands and started burning and destroying vehicles and disrupting the peace of the environment.
“As at the time of filing the report, they have burnt down three tippers. We had to invite other security agencies including Operation Burst, Nigerian Police, we are all there together seeing what we can do to bring down the tension in the community.”
Speaking on what led to the accident, the Oyo state Sector Commander said “My boys said they noticed it was due to over-speeding and loss of control on the part of the tipper driver.
“But on the side of the motorcycle rider, we learnt the bike was overloaded and this is one of the things we preach to road users not to engage on overloading whether it is a bike or a car.
“If that bike was carrying just the normal required stipulations of the rider and a passenger, we would have been having just two casualties in our hands and not this number we are talking about, that is why we always frown at overloading.
“The total number involved in the crash is six people. Four killed, one injured (the only female that recovered) while the tipper driver is at large.”
Also speaking, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olugbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the Divisional Police Officer in the area had sent the signal to the state command headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.
Fadeyi said, “It is true. The DPO told me that the incident happened when the driver of the truck was trying to avoid killing some sheep and rammed into the students on the Okada.
“Police have moved to the area to ensure life and prosperity were not vandalised by the angry students.”
Sources said officers of the Oyo State Police command, Operation Burst and Amotekun officers were on ground at the scene to forestall further breakdown of law and order in the area.
