The Dangerous Ogbomoso- Oyo Road

Ogbomoso-Oyo road is  is one of the first set of road constructed in Nigeria , it links the South  West and the Northern part of Nigeria together

When the road was constructed, it was one of the best road in the country then and the government ensure periodic repairs on the road to ensure smooth ride and safety of people plying then route.

Investigation reveals that the last Major repairs on the road was carried out in the 70’s.

Semiu, a commercial driver told our reporter that , we hardly record many accident on the road  until the late 80’s when there was an increase in “trailer” (Articulated vehicles) plying the road.  And since then till date it is getting worse.

 

He acknowledge the efforts of successive government in carrying out repairs on the road but obviously the road is too narrow and weak.

 

For sometimes now it has been like a journey of Israelites to road users, the journey of less that 2 hours now turn to a five hours or more  because of the condition of the road.

The road has also lead to loss of thousands of lives and valuable properties , it has rendered many people useless and killed dreams.

The hope of the people of people plying the route when in 1979 the Federal government approved  construction of dual road from  from Ibadan to Ilorin but work the didn’t start until early 2000 during  Olusegun Obasanjo’s led administration.

The Ibadan- Oyo axis and Ogbomoso -Ilorin section of the road has since been completed and commission for use but Ogbomoso-ilorin road is yet to be completed due to paucity of funds.

Residents of Ogbomoso and Oyo are making efforts to sensitize the government on the dangerous trend being experienced on the road.
