Team Oyo is making impressive strides at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, clinching multiple medals across various sporting categories and showcasing the state’s athletic talent and determination.
In Taekwondo, Harun Usman and Harun Kudirat each secured bronze medals in their individual categories, while the pair teamed up to win silver in the mixed pair event. Aliyu Ibrahim added to the tally with a silver medal in the Men’s Fin Weight category.
In Kung Fu, Atewe Victory earned a bronze medal in the Nandao event, while Akinkunmi Joshua also claimed bronze in his category.
Team Oyo’s Cycling contingent showed strong teamwork, winning bronze in the Mixed Relay event with team members Ajibade Quadri, Okeyah Temple, Sofolahan Abiodun, Azeez Abass, Yekeen Tawakalt, Angulum Doris, Olawale Peace, and Salaudeen Ramat. The women’s team also grabbed bronze in the 3KM Pursuit, represented by Yekeen Tawakalt, Angulum Doris, Olawale Peace, and Alabi Oluwayemisi.
In Weightlifting, Oyo State emerged dominant with Osijo Mary claiming a triple gold victory in the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and Overall Lift categories. A Commonwealth medalist, Osijo continues to cement her reputation as one of Nigeria’s top lifters.
Team Oyo’s assistant captain, Taiwo Liadi, also had a commendable outing, winning three silver medals in the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and Total Lift categories in the 81kg division. A Commonwealth silver medalist herself, Taiwo pushed hard for gold but settled for silver after a competitive showing.
Ekah Rosemary added to the state’s tally with three bronze medals in her category.
As the festival continues, Team Oyo is set to compete in more events including hockey, female handball, cricket, cycling, weightlifting, chess, and Ayo Olopon, with fans and officials hopeful for even more medals in the days ahead.
Team Oyo’s performance so far reflects not just athletic excellence but the result of solid preparation, teamwork, and the athletes’ unwavering commitment to representing the state with pride.
