The Majority Leader of the Oyo House of Assembly representing Ogbomoso South State Constituency, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, on Tuesday moved the motion at the floor of the House for speedy completion of the ongoing rehabilitation of Ogbomoso roads which has resulted in the travellers making use of feeder roads as alternative routes.
Hon. Sanjo and Hon ‘Wumi Oladeji said the road is the most strategic link between the South West and the Northern part of the country.
In his presentation, the Majority Leader emphasized the importance for speedy completion of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ogbomoso section of the expressway in order to ease the burden on the feeder roads.
“Aware that the delay of the Ogbomoso section of the expressway has resulted in travellers making the feeder roads as their alternative routes, thereby leading to their massive deterioration as motorists, including heavy-duty vehicles, drive through the feeder roads, the resultant effects of which are gullies, pot-holes, cracks, crevices, destruction of electric poles and other deplorable features that have formed on the road due to ceaseless traffic.
“Worried that the present state of the road has caused many accidents and is making travelling unpleasant for motorists as it exposes them to robbery attacks.”
He was concerned that if urgent steps are not taken to complete the rehabilitation of the road that is serving as dependable alternative to the Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso-Ilorin expressway, travellers will continue to suffer untold hardships, loss of lives and waste of man-hours for users and affected communities in general.
Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin observed the need for relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government at all levels to put appropriate measures in place in order to prevent further degradation and deterioration. He also urged the Southwest Zonal Director, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to expedite work on the ongoing dual carriage expressway from Ogbomoso to Ibadan for articulated and heavy duty vehicles can return to their normal route.
In addition, he appealed to Engr. Seyi Makinde through the Public Works Department to come to the aid of the people in the affected areas by proffering temporary or palliative road repair works in order to alleviate the sufferings of road users in the town.
Also, the community associations of the affected areas were urged to liase with Our State Rural Electrification Board to take inventory of the damaged electrical poles with a view to replacing them.
In conclusion, Local Government authories of the affected areas were admonished to rise up as a matter of priority and ameliorate the conditions of the affected roads
While directing FERMA to provide alternative routes for motorists to ply until completion, the House called on FERMA to appear in the House on 15th July for detailed explanation on the delay and also urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to expedite work on the ongoing dual carriage expressway from Ogbomoso to Oyo.
