Nigerian Afrofuji singer, Afeez Adesina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has died at the age of 22.
The young musician reportedly passed away on Sunday in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and has since been buried in Ayetoro, also in Ogun State.
His death was confirmed by singer Bolisco, an associate of controversial artiste Portable, who disclosed that Destiny Boy had been battling an illness before his demise.
According to the confirmation, the singer experienced severe symptoms and was said to have vomited blood prior to his death.
Destiny Boy rose to fame at a young age with his distinctive Fuji-inspired sound, which blended traditional Fuji elements with contemporary Nigerian music.
He began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for veteran Fuji musician, Pasuma.
He gained national recognition in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral on social media and marked his breakthrough in the Nigerian music scene.
Riding on the success of the viral cover, Destiny Boy went on to release Fuji renditions of popular songs by artistes such as Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor, steadily growing his fan base across the country.
Some of his original songs include Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan and Lowkey, all of which reflected his unique fusion of Fuji rhythms with modern sounds.
His death has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian music industry, with fans and colleagues mourning the loss of a promising young talent whose career was cut short in its prime.
