Members of Staff and residents of Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State have frowned at alleged plan by private developer handling the new estate beside the quarter to demolish BCOS staff quarters.
The Ibadan Media Hub and Theatre Village, which is now BCOS quarters was constructed by the administration of Col. David Jemibewon.
It was gathered a large expanse of the unused land has already been cleared for a new estate but the contractor intend to extend to the quarters.
One of the residents of the quarters told our reporter that , few days ago they marked some of the quarters for demolition just because they were not occupied, one of the occupant is dead and his relatives are yet to pack his properties, another one is occupied but the occupant is not around while the only vacant one already has a lot of people jostling for it.
According to the source, we were not given any notice, what we first saw was pegging of some part of the quarters and later mark on some of the building which they tagged unoccupied.
“‘We thought it was a joke but we later learnt that they are coming for the demolition on sunday morning so we decided to wait for them to see how they will demolish building being occupied by people Without proper notification
” We are not against usage of the large expanse of land beside the quarters but demolishing the quarters won’t work, its not as if we are using the place free, we pay for it, they deduct charges from our salaries, it will be unfair to treat us in that manner.
Previous administrations, including the immediate past Abiola Ajimobi, tried to make use of vacant expanse of land around the staff quarters but succumbed to popular voice of workers.
Meanwhile the management of the Broadcasting Corporation Of Oyo State (BCOS) has described as baseless, wicked and false a rumour that the state government plans to demolish the corporation’s Staff Quarter.
The management restated that the interests of the residents will be protected and accorded topmost priority in any development plan or scheme.
The statement emphasised that there is absolutely no truth in the story that the Staff Quarters is to be demolished and residents forcefully ejected.
It advised all the residents, the corporation’s labour unions and all members of staff to ignore “this wicked and unsubstantiated rumour.
It added that “the management will continue to engage the labour unions and the residents on the development plans for the proposed Engineer Lere Adigun Estate.”
