In a bid to reduce the influx of migrants into the United Kingdom, the Home Office of the United Kingdom on Monday announced that it had commenced the implementation of its policy banning Nigerian students and other overseas students from bringing in dependants via the study visa route.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Home Office reiterated that only those on postgraduate research or government-sponsored scholarship students will be exempted from the development.
The post reads:
“We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration.
From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK.
Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt”
Recalled that in May 2023, the United Kingdom put in place a law to stop Nigerian students, and others studying in the UK from bringing family as dependents except under specific circumstances.
But a tweep Ryan Morrison in his response wrote: Why? Britain is a nation of migrants. We are a melting pot of ideas, communities and people. Each group bringing some new richness to the fabric of British society. We’ve never been “one people”.
Another tweep. Dr Andy Palmer wrote : International students in the 2021/22 academic year contributed £41.9 billion to the UK economy. Even when accounting for dependants and other costs, international students are a huge net contributor to the UK economy. Every 11 non-EU students generates £1m worth of net economic impact for the UK economy. I hope someone in The Home Office did the economics on this!
Dr Victor Udeozo in his response said This policy will change within 3 years. Why? International student numbers will drop drastically, university funding will be affected significantly, and they will lobby (bribe) MPs to push a U-turn. 3 years
“Stop the boats and start a mass deportation/repatriation programme. No uni students should have the right to bring their families here but this isn’t the major issue. Illegals and terrorist sympathisers need to be removed…urgently.” said another tweep Deedy
