The Nigeria Police Force has intercepted two suspected gunrunners in Katsina State, recovering a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and more than 1,200 rounds of live ammunition.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspects — Abdussalam Muhammed, 25, and Aminu Mamman, 23, both residents of Baure village in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State — were arrested in the early hours of September 1, 2025.
Police operatives attached to the Katsina State Command, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted the duo along Ingawa–Karkarku village road at about 4:35 a.m. Their operational vehicle, a blue Volkswagen Golf with registration number RSH-528 BV, was searched, leading to the recovery of the arms and ammunition concealed inside.
The exhibits recovered include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1,063 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, and 232 rounds of 7.62x69mm PKT ammunition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the weapons were being transported from Hadejia in Jigawa State to Safana LGA, Katsina State, for onward distribution to criminal elements.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their swift response and urged them to maintain the momentum in combating illegal arms trafficking. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to dismantling organised criminal networks across the country and called on the public to provide timely and credible information to aid security efforts.
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
