The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), on Thursday handed over 50-seater hybrid CNG buses to Nigeria’s major transport unions as part of efforts to advance clean energy transportation across the country.
At a brief ceremony in Abuja, the buses were officially presented by the Program Director of PCNGI, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, and jointly received by leading transport union chiefs including Mr. Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), Chairman of NURTW; Alhaji Usman Yusuf, President of NARTO; and Ambassador Mohammed Abubakar, Vice President of RTEAN.
Speaking at the event, Oluwagbemi described the handover as a major milestone in the federal government’s strategy to reduce reliance on petrol-powered vehicles, cut carbon emissions, and promote safer, more sustainable mass transit systems.
According to him, the introduction of hybrid CNG buses will not only ease the financial burden of transportation operators but also provide commuters with affordable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
The PCNGI, launched under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is designed to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to gas-powered vehicles in line with global energy transition goals.
Representatives of the unions lauded the federal government and NNPCL for the gesture, pledging their commitment to adopting cleaner energy solutions in the nation’s transport sector.
