OYSIEC Fixes Oyo LG Elections for January 16, 2027

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced January 16, 2027, as the date for the next local government council elections in the state.

The decision was reached on Thursday during the commission’s inaugural meeting held at its headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan. The meeting, chaired by the OYSIEC Chairman, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, focused on preparations toward conducting a transparent, credible and peaceful electoral process across the state.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Dr. Adeniyi disclosed that the elections would be conducted across all polling units in the 33 local government areas of Oyo State.

According to the schedule released by the commission, the main election will hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while campaigns are expected to end at midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027. In the event of a run-off, supplementary elections will be conducted on Saturday, January 23, 2027, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The commission also clarified that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors in the 33 local government councils will expire on May 23, 2027.

Dr. Adeniyi explained that the early release of the election timetable was in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), which requires that notice of an election be given at least 360 days before the polling date.

“Notice is hereby given that the local government council elections shall be conducted in accordance with the provisions of Section 28 of the Electoral Act 2022 and the OYSIEC Law, Cap 154, Laws of Oyo State,” the statement read.

The OYSIEC chairman called on political parties, security agencies and other stakeholders to cooperate with the commission to ensure a smooth electoral exercise, assuring residents of the state of the commission’s commitment to delivering a credible and widely acceptable outcome.
