The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, represented by his Deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, on Tuesday, received the Torch of Unity in preparation for the Ogun 2025 National Sports Festival. The presentation took place at the Governor’s Office, where the delegation from the National Sports Commission, led by Mrs. Ekeana Ibora, was accompanied by members of Team Oyo.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Makinde described the Torch of Unity as a powerful emblem of peace, unity, and brotherhood among Nigeria’s 36 states. He emphasized that the torch symbolizes the country’s collective commitment to national cohesion and shared development.

The Governor urged the state’s athletes to uphold the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and discipline, encouraging them to be exemplary ambassadors of Oyo State on and off the field. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to rewarding excellence and supporting athletes who bring honour to the state.
Also present at the event was the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, along with senior officials of the Oyo State Sports Council.
Following the Unity Torch procession, Commissioner Adegoke addressed Team Oyo, reiterating the state government’s commitment to ensuring a rewarding and comfortable experience for all athletes during the festival.
She officially named Commonwealth gold medalist and Olympic weightlifter Rofiat Lawal as Team Oyo Captain, with Laidi Taiwo as her assistant. The Commissioner tasked the duo with ensuring proper coordination among the contingents and maintaining discipline.
“Treat your captain with the same respect you give your coaches and officials,” she advised. “I will work towards ensuring that medal bonuses and athlete wages are paid before the end of this month.”
With the symbolic lighting of the Torch of Unity and renewed commitments from the government, Oyo State sets its sights on success at Ogun 2025.
