The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday revealed her intention to urgently Intervene in the deplorable State of primary health care in Oyo state.
The House made this known while deliberating on a bill sponsored by Hon. Akintunde Olajide representing Lagelu State Constituency and co-sponsored by Hon. Bamidele Adeola representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju State Constituency reads
“That the Honourable House deliberate on the deplorable condition of primary health centres in the state and call on the relevant government agency to put in place necessary the grassroot”.
The bill further noted that the current situation of primary health centres in the state is saddening.
The bill which observes that the condition of many primary health centres in the state is below expectation also maintained that the maternal morality rate in the state is worrisome.
The bill is also concerned that inadequate public health care has led to increase in the number of untreated diseases like malaria, typhoid, fever, measles and other chronic respiratory diseases.
Majority Leader of the House and Honourable representing Ogbomoso South State Constituency, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin while reacting to this motion reminisced that the idea of primary health care was introduced by Prof. Olukoye Ransom Kuti in 1986.
Adedoyin noted that the sum of 500,000 Naira has been budgeted for each local government by the Oyo state government to cater for primary health care on monthly basis, adding that the funds are been siphoned by some wrong hands.
Minority leader of the House and Honourable representing Atiba State Constituency also reacting to the case Urges the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde to declare a state of emergency on Health sector in Oyo state.
Deputy Speaker of the House, and Honourable representing Ona-Ara State Constituency, Hon. Abiodun Fadeyi revealed that through thorough investigation, he gathered that Health Officers are unable to access the monetary funds released to local government health department by the government.
Giving his grand reaction, Honourable Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin enjoins that the local government funds account be audited quarterly and that the Committee on health must put in place a system to monitor how drugs and other medical materials are distributed and made available to the people.
Ogundoyin added that there should be renovation of dilapidated health care centres, and provision of medical materials across the state.
The house further resolved that the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board and the Commissioner for Health would be invited to the plenary sitting on the 24th of October to discuss the lasting solution to the bad situation of the sector in the state.
The house also urges Oyo state primary health care board to ensure that the central store of primary health centres across the state are overhauled.
