Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the executive arm of government to urgently establish a bureau of quality control/ department in order to address the poor performance of students of the state in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and other external examinations.
This was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance titled “Remedying the Declining Performance of Students in Oyo State in Public Examinations through Improved Resource Inputs” jointly moved by Hon. Bimbo Oladeji (Ogbomoso North) and Olusegun Olaleye (Ibadan North 2).
They noted that the performance of the students in public examinations has been a source of worry to government, parents, teachers and other stakeholders that needs holistic approach to tackle.
“Continuous decline in the performance has become a of students in Oyo State in public examinations as evident in the analyses of May/June West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations results for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 where Oyo state ranked 24th, 25th and 29th respectively coming behind other states in the South-West, Nigeria including Lagos, Ekiti and Ondo state calls for urgent attention.
“This poor performance has become a major challenge in the state due to the fact that actualization of the national education objectives of which Oyo state is a component, is dependent on ensuring that the talents of our citizenry including students are fully exploited”.

The house then called for establishment of an effective separate department to monitor performance index in students in all schools across the state.
They suggested that there is a need for establishment of such bureau and if there is any department of such, there is a need to overhaul it and make it effective.
