The Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, has applauded the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for conducting what he described as a free, fair, and credible election that strengthens democratic values within the union.
The election, held on Tuesday at the Oyo State Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, produced Mr. Akeem Abass of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as the new Chairman of the Oyo NUJ, alongside other elected officials.
In a statement personally endorsed by him, Oyelade congratulated Abass and all winners of the keenly contested election, describing the outcome as “a proud moment for the Oyo NUJ.” He commended the electoral committee for its transparency and professionalism, noting that the process has “set a new standard for other councils across the country” and has allowed professionalism to thrive within the union.
Oyelade, who served as Vice Chairman of the union 40 years ago, said the state government was delighted with the seamless and peaceful conduct of the election. He also praised the outgoing chairman and his executive for ensuring a smooth transition and for what he termed their “outstanding performance.”
“You have made history today,” Oyelade stated. “By conducting a transparent election, you have set an example worthy of emulation.”
He urged Abass and his team to focus on promoting good governance within the union and contribute meaningfully to the development of journalism in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
The commissioner also commended other contestants for accepting the outcome of the election with maturity, describing their conduct as a demonstration of true democracy that further safeguarded the integrity of the process.
Oyelade wished all participants well and encouraged them to look forward to greater opportunities ahead.
