The Oyo State Government has taken decisive action against environmental violations in Ibadan, sealing an industrial facility and a popular lounge while declaring a state of emergency over waste disposal practices in markets and public places.
The industrial facility, Fountain Manufacturing Company Ltd in Oluyole, Ibadan, was sealed following repeated violations of environmental regulations. The move came after numerous complaints and petitions from residents who reported health hazards caused by the facility’s continuous emission of unhealthy fumes. Architect Abdulmojeed Olawale Mogbojubola, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, explained that despite several attempts at mediation, the facility’s owner failed to respond or comply with government directives to adhere to state environmental laws.
In a related action, the Ministry also sealed the Casta De Lounge, located along Akala Express. The lounge was found guilty of dumping waste on the highway median and refusing to utilize government-assigned waste collectors, leading to several environmental offenses.
In a further effort to address the state’s mounting waste disposal challenges, the government has declared a state of emergency on inappropriate waste disposal in all markets and public places. Speaking during a meeting with market heads in the Ministry’s conference room, Commissioner Mogbojubola announced the distribution of skip bins to major markets across the state. He expressed confidence that the installation of these waste disposal containers would curtail indiscriminate refuse dumping on road medians and other unauthorized sites.
The Commissioner also urged market executives—the “Baba and Iya Lojas”—to maintain high standards of cleanliness and proactive waste management, warning that failure to do so could result in avoidable market closures. He highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts to promptly evacuate waste and reiterated the government’s commitment to ending indiscriminate refuse dumping in all public spaces.
