The Oyo State Government has commenced the disbursement of bursary awards to students of Oyo State origin in Law Schools, Medical Schools, Aviation Schools, and final-year students in universities and polytechnics across the country.
A total of 2,950 students have been selected for the bursary after meeting the required criteria, out of over 3,000 applicants, according to the Senior Special Assistant on Students’ Affairs to Governor Seyi Makinde, Victor Olojede.
Olojede, who made the disclosure on Friday, stated that Governor Makinde had approved N554,989,000 for the bursary, describing him as a strong supporter of students.
“We are officially commencing the payment of bursary awards to final-year students of polytechnics, universities, Nigerian Law School, Aviation Schools, and Medical and Clinical Schools. Over 3,000 students registered for the process, and after due diligence, 2,950 qualified,” he said.
He added that among the beneficiaries are 105 medical and clinical students, four maritime and aviation students, while the rest are final-year students in universities and polytechnics.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Scholarship Board, Rt. Hon. Olawale Atilola, described the bursary as further proof of Governor Makinde’s commitment to education. He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, emphasizing that due process was followed in the selection.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying it would ease their financial burden.
A beneficiary, Yetunde Ayoola, said, “Before now, I only relied on my parents for financial support. I never met the criteria for scholarships, but this bursary, which requires only Oyo State indigene status, has helped me. I sincerely thank Governor Makinde.”
Similarly, Akanbi Mayowa, another beneficiary, stated, “This bursary will help ease my final-year school fees. Before now, I had to do menial jobs alongside my parents’ support. This initiative is a relief, and I appreciate the governor.”
A medical student at the University of Ibadan also noted that the bursary was timely, especially in assisting with final-year and induction fees.
“This is the first time in years that bursary payments are being made. It will greatly help us, especially with our financial responsibilities in our final year,” the student said.
The bursary payment follows Governor Makinde’s broader efforts to invest in education and support students across the state.
