The Oyo State contingent arrived in Ogun State on Friday ahead of the Gateway Games, with high hopes and strong preparation ahead of the official opening on Sunday.
Speaking on the readiness of his team, head coach of the Oyo State hockey team, Yemi Siyanbola, expressed confidence in their chances at this year’s competition. “We were in camp for two weeks and we’ve put everything in place to come and make history here,” he said.
Reflecting on the team’s past performances, especially their bronze medal finish at the last National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State, Coach Siyanbola is optimistic about clinching gold this time. “This time we have a stronger team. The team bonding is there. We have over six players in the national team, and they train regularly. With God on our side, we are confident,” he added.
The boxing team is also setting its sights on surpassing its previous achievements. Head coach Abideen Ayila noted that after securing 1 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals in Asaba, the team is better prepared for success in Ogun. “We are preparing ourselves more than the last festival, and I have more confidence than the last time,” he said.
Meanwhile, Coach Oseni Rufai Olufunke of the Wushu boxing team echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing her team’s readiness and the continued support from the Oyo State government. At the last festival in Asaba, her team secured 2 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
“We are fully prepared. They gave us the same number of fighters as the last festival, and with that, I believe we will win more medals this time,” she stated.
As the Gateway Games prepare to kick off, the Oyo State contingent remains determined to improve on its past performances and make a strong impression in Ogun.
