Parents, undergraduates and other stakeholders have voiced their disappointment as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) extended its ongoing strike by 12 weeks
The aggrieved teachers had on early Monday morning 9th May, 2022 extended it over two months warning strike by another 12 weeks in protest against the government’s failure to meet their demands.
Hence, parents, undergraduates and stakeholders affected by this development have flooded the different social medias with angers and frustrations.
A parent, Mr Ayo Ishola, said ASUU and the Federal Government could sort out their differences without making students victim. He lamented that the strikes are becoming too overwhelming, noting that this development is unnecessary and does not portray the country in good light before the world.
He lamented “why must Nigerian students suffer from the shortcomings of our leaders, this would be the third time strike is being extended. This is even a warning strike, what do we do when it becomes indefinite. ASUU and FG shouldn’t make us suffer”.
A Facebook user and an educationist, Moses Adewole expressed frustrations over the misplaced priorities of the Nigerian government, as they are not taking the education of the average nigerian serious but instead chase frivolities.
He further said ” No money in Nigeria but majority of those buying presidential forms are past and present political office holders. They don’t have any other job than politics, they stole money at will and are putting
masses in shackles of poverty”.
Moreso, A Twitter user and a student of a Nigerian University, Victor Anumba, also lamented as why Nigerian leaders are lackadaisical towards the educational system of the country. He said ” You see that we have a self centered leaders in this country, who care only about their personal interests. ASUU has been on strike for 2 months about to go indefinite
but, this leaders don’t care because their children are abroad schooling, but just a threat to shut down airline services, they are running around because it is affecting
them. I pity this country”
Meanwhile, Federal Government, as at the time of this report has remained silent in its reaction while the ASUU maintained that until all demands are met, their decisions remain unmoved. Hence, the effect of this extension this strike action means that public universities would remain close.
ASUU’s demands include the non-implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed with government in December 2020 on funding for revitalisation of public universities (both federal and states), renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ ASUU Agreement and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
