As conversations intensify around the 2027 gubernatorial race in Oyo State, there is a growing need for sober reflection, honest dialogue, and a renewed commitment to true democratic principles. It is my considered opinion that the political leadership of Oyo State in 2027 must rise above the habitual culture of political post-sharing and instead embody genuine democratic ideals.
Recent insinuations that the next governor must emerge from a predetermined senatorial zone run contrary to the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusive representation. Such propositions should concern all progressive leaders and stakeholders who desire a united, forward-looking Oyo State.
Our state must find the courage to harmonize its demographic realities with a fair system of political rotation—without compromising merit. Even if the eventual winner of the governorship election emerges from the most populous senatorial district, such victory must come through open, transparent competition within political parties rather than through imposition. Only through rigorous democratic processes can our democracy be strengthened, and not weakened. Candidates must never appear favoured; they must earn their mandates.
Oyo State should aspire to become a trailblazer in modeling how demographic strength, fair representation, and political inclusion can coexist. This is undoubtedly challenging, but it is both necessary and achievable.
As a proud son of Oyo State, I find it disturbing that the same set of serial candidates—especially from one zone—continue to dominate the political space. Ibadan, despite its size and significance, cannot continue to singularly produce governorship candidates. Such a pattern risks creating an imbalance that borders on political marginalization of other zones.
This should serve as a wake-up call. Non-Ibadan zones must present capable, visionary candidates who can sustain the progressive development trajectory of the state. Only then can we preserve unity, harmony, and inclusivity among all stakeholders of Oyo State.
