The Ooni of Ife and Natural Father of the Oduduwa race, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, describing him as a beacon of tradition and a symbol of stability.
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne in 2024, joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after his 90th birthday celebration.
In a statement signed by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Comrade Moses Olafare, the Ooni, who also serves as the permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, said the news of the monarch’s demise has deeply saddened the Oduduwa race globally.
“Though brief, the reign of Oba Olakulehin was marked by grace, wisdom, and fatherly leadership that brought peace and stability to the ancient city of Ibadan,” the Ooni stated.
He described the late Olubadan as a quintessential traditional ruler whose path to the throne reflected humility, discipline, and lifelong service to his people.
The Ooni recalled the cordial relationship between the thrones of Oduduwa and Olubadan, noting Oba Olakulehin’s active participation in fostering unity among Yoruba monarchs and promoting Yoruba cultural heritage.
“He remained a respected custodian of our cherished traditions and his voice resonated with wisdom during inter-council dialogues. His passing marks the end of an era,” Ooni Ogunwusi added.
Offering condolences to the royal family, the Olubadan-in-Council, the people of Ibadanland, and the Oyo State Government, the Ooni particularly acknowledged Governor Seyi Makinde under whose leadership the late monarch received his staff of office in July 2024.
He called on all Yoruba sons and daughters across the world to honour the memory of the departed monarch, who, according to him, epitomized patience, loyalty, and dedicated service to tradition.
“The throne of Oduduwa stands in solidarity with the people of Ibadan at this moment of grief and remembrance. Yorubaland will dearly miss his voice, his wisdom, and his leadership,” the Ooni concluded.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin among the revered ancestors of the Yoruba race.
