The Ondo State Government has approved the release of ₦3.5 billion as its counterpart funding for the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), a World Bank-supported initiative aimed at improving rural connectivity and boosting agricultural productivity.

The State Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, made the disclosure at a post-State Executive Council (EXCO) briefing held in Akure. He explained that the fund underscores the administration’s commitment to bridging the rural-urban infrastructure gap.

“This funding reflects Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s resolve to transform rural economies through strategic infrastructure. Our engineers will soon begin detailed road assessments across the 18 local government areas of the state,” Olawoye said.

He further noted that special attention would be given to upgrading hydraulic drainage systems to ensure the durability and resilience of rural roads.

In a related development, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, announced that the Executive Council has also approved a comprehensive statewide flood vulnerability assessment aimed at protecting communities from the increasing threats of flooding.

Dr. Loko said the assessment goes beyond identifying high-risk areas to investigating root causes such as poor land use and blocked drainage channels.

“We are not only mapping danger zones but also examining environmental factors that contribute to flooding,” he stated. While acknowledging that the process might not be perfect, he assured residents that emergency measures, including possible temporary relocation, are in place to respond to any crisis. He also urged residents in flood-prone communities to cooperate with assessment teams.

Also at the briefing, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, announced the installation of two traditional rulers following the Council’s approval including Prince Olusola Joseph Ajaka, as the Gbogunro of Idi-Ogba Alagbon, in Ilaje Local Government Area; and
Prince Isiaka Oseni, as the Alale of Akungba-Akoko, in Akoko South West Local Government Area.

Takuro stated that both appointments followed due process, including thorough recommendations from kingmakers and relevant local authorities.

Speaking on the overall significance of the recent approvals, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, said the developments are reflective of the government’s holistic and people-centered governance strategy.

“From improving access for farmers to protecting lives from environmental hazards, these actions reflect our commitment to inclusive development,” Ajanaku said, adding that more transformative initiatives would be unveiled in the coming months.

He called on the people of Ondo State to continue supporting the administration as it implements its development agenda across all sectors.
