The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors, marking the end of a brief but eventful reign as the 43rd Olubadan of the ancient city.
The monarch, who ascended the throne in July 2024, passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin was formally presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024. His one-year reign was marked by efforts to preserve the peace, culture, and tradition of Ibadanland.
A source close to the palace informed National Insight that key members of the Balogun line of the royal family have commenced the traditional protocol to officially inform the governor of the monarch’s demise.
It was also gathered that the Otun Olubadan and heir apparent to the throne, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, is currently in Lagos and expected to return to Ibadan shortly in light of the development.
Further announcements regarding burial rites and succession are expected in the coming days.
