Prominent leaders in Oyo State have joined thousands of well-wishers to celebrate the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, His Eminence Sheikh Abdulganiyy Abubakry Agbotomokekere, as he marks his 90th birthday.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Dr) Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I), led tributes to the revered Islamic cleric, describing him as a pillar of peace, unity, and development in Ibadan and beyond.
“Chief Imam of Ibadanland is a lover of peace who maintains peaceful coexistence among religious leaders not only in Ibadan but across Oyo State,” the monarch said in a statement on Saturday. “He is an illustrious son of Ibadan who is after the unity, progress, and peace of Ibadanland.”
Governor ‘Seyi Makinde also hailed Sheikh Agbotomokekere’s impactful life and enduring legacy of service. In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor praised the cleric’s immense contributions to Islam, Ibadanland, Oyo State, and humanity at large.
“Baba has been an exemplary religious leader, with a great sense of patriotism and commitment to the development of Oyo State. As he joins the rank of the nonagenarians, my prayer is that may Allah (SWT) grant him more years and good health,” Makinde said.
Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC–Oyo South) also extended his felicitations, describing the Chief Imam as a spiritual beacon and unifying force in the state.
“Sheikh Agbotomokekere has led a life of deep faith, humility, and moral leadership. His teachings and exemplary life continue to inspire generations,” Senator Alli noted in a statement on Sunday. He prayed for continued wisdom, good health, and long life for the cleric.
Sheikh Agbotomokekere, the 18th Chief Imam of Ibadanland, has served diligently as the foremost Muslim leader in Ibadan for decades. He is also the Grand Imam of Oyo State and the Grand Patron of the League of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States.
His 90th birthday is being celebrated across religious, political, and cultural spheres as a milestone in the life of a man widely regarded as a symbol of peace and moral guidance.
