The Oke-Ogun Coalitions, a socio-political group, convened in Ibadan on Saturday to discuss the future of the Oke-Ogun zone in Oyo State. The meeting, which was the coalition’s second general meeting, brought together various social and cultural interest groups from the Oke-Ogun area aiming to put in context a development framework through mass efforts.

The coalition intends to foster relationships between religious institutions and political groups, promoting lasting unity among the Oke-Ogun people.

According to Dr. Bimpe Aderounmu, Chairman of the Coalitions, Oke-Ogun “is renowned for its peaceful nature, exceptional qualities, and outstanding features, making it an ideal region for collective development efforts.”

Aderounmu emphasized the need for mechanisms to ensure justice and fairness in the region’s interactions with other elements of Oyo State. This, he believes, will foster a sense of belonging among community members. The coalition seeks to promote fairness and equity in public enterprises while respecting the rights of other regions in the state.

The Oke-Ogun Coalitions’ efforts coincide with growing concerns about the region’s development and security. Recently, the Oke-Ogun Council of Elders expressed alarm over the region’s insecurity, citing herders-farmers clashes and the influx of Fulani herdsmen from outside Nigeria.

The council called on the federal and Oyo State governments to enhance security measures, enforce anti-open grazing laws, and address the region’s marginalization. The Oke-Ogun Coalitions’ initiatives align with these concerns, demonstrating a shared commitment to the region’s prosperity.

As the Oke-Ogun Coalitions continue to promote unity and development, their efforts may also contribute to the region’s growing political aspirations. There have been calls for an Oke-Ogun indigene to become the next governor of Oyo State.

With some politicians advocating for a power shift to the region, efforts have been put in place for Oke-Ogun to produce the next Senator to contrast the present situation in Oyo North.

Ultimately, the Oke-Ogun Coalitions’ endeavours aim to ensure that the region’s unique qualities and strengths are harnessed for collective progress, fostering a brighter future for the Oke-Ogun people.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various groups, including the Movement for the Rights of Oke-Ogun People (MOROP), Oke-Ogun Former Parliamentarians, Equity Forum, the Oke-Ogun Crusaders, the Oke-Ogun Indigenous Youths and the Oke-Ogun Revives among others. This diverse representation, according to Hon. Emmanuel Ameye representing the Paliamentarians, “underscores the coalition’s commitment to inclusivity and collective progress.”
