A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, is dead.
Onanuga, who was serving as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State until her demise.
In an official statement released by the National Assembly spokesman, Hon. Akin Rotimi, the lawmaker passed away on January 15, 2025, following a brief illness.
“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State,” the statement read.
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga began her legislative journey in 2019 after being elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first tenure, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed initiatives aimed at empowering women and advancing social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a position in which she was widely respected for her leadership skills and commitment to maintaining legislative discipline.
Fondly referred to as ‘Ijaya’ by her peers, Onanuga was celebrated for her intellect, humility, and unwavering dedication to her constituents. Her contributions to Nigeria’s legislative landscape left a lasting mark, particularly in areas concerning social development and women’s rights.
The House of Representatives expressed deep condolences to her family, friends, and constituents, describing her as a vibrant and dedicated public servant whose life was devoted to improving the well-being of Nigerians.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State – particularly the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency – and the entire membership of the National Assembly. As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. May her soul rest in peace.
