Col. Adegboyega Adeniran (retd), a distinguished Nigerian civil war hero and educationist, has died at the age of 87.

A family source confirmed that the retired military officer passed away around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, at Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
He died in his hometown, Ogbomoso.
Col. Adeniran was an iconic figure in Nigeria’s military history, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War between 1967 and 1970, where he earned a reputation as a fearless frontline commander and brilliant tactician.
Beyond his military exploits, Adeniran made enduring contributions to education and agriculture in Ogbomosoland. He founded the first private nursery, primary and secondary schools in the town—Ayoka Nursery and Primary School and Adeniran Memorial Grammar School (AMGS).
The Oyo State Government later took over AMGS. He also donated classroom blocks to Ogbomoso Grammar School and Ogbomoso High School, facilities that remain in use today.
He was recently honoured by staff and students of AMGS during the school’s anniversary celebration on October 16.
Military Career
Col. Adeniran underwent his early military training at the depot in Zaria and the Nigerian Military Training School in Kaduna before proceeding overseas for Officer Cadet training. His exceptional performance during training earned him immediate retention as an instructor—an honour reserved for officers with outstanding tactical insight and leadership qualities.
Between 1961 and 1965, he served as a combatant in the United Nations peacekeeping mission during the Democratic Republic of Congo crisis, where he distinguished himself further and rose steadily in rank.
At the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in May 1967, Adeniran was serving with the 2 Mechanized Division in Ibadan under then Lt. Col. Olusegun Obasanjo. He later served in the 2nd Infantry Division on the federal side, where his abilities earned him appointment as a sector commander under Col. Alani Akinrinade. Following Akinrinade’s redeployment, Adeniran became Brigade Commander.
As brigade commander, he reorganised his troops and instilled renewed zeal, efficiency and tactical precision, transforming the unit into a formidable fighting force. Known as a frontline officer, he led his men from the thick of battle and fought in several war theatres. His name, by accounts, struck fear among opposing Biafran forces.
His military contemporaries included notable officers such as then Major Abdulsalami Abubakar, who later became Nigeria’s Head of State, and General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters.
Following the surrender of Biafran forces in January 1970, Adeniran was appointed Garrison Commander with headquarters in Uromi, tasked with mopping up arms and flushing out residual combatants—an assignment typically reserved for officers with proven tactical excellence. He retired from the army in February 1971.
Life After the Army
After leaving the military, Col. Adeniran returned to Ogbomoso, where he established Adegolu Farms, a large-scale mechanised farm located behind the former Ogbomoso Girls’ High School, on land now occupied by LAUTECH. At the time, it was the largest private farm in Ogbomoso, engaging in both crop and livestock production and employing many residents.
A passionate advocate of education, Adeniran often described education as the driving force behind his post-military life. His schools gained acclaim within and beyond Ogbomoso, setting standards in private education, including being among the first to provide school bus transportation for pupils.
Col. Adegboyega Adeniran is remembered as a soldier, patriot, educationist, farmer and community builder whose legacy continues to shape Ogbomoso and Nigeria at large.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
