The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on media organizations to prioritize the payment of salaries and insurance coverage for journalists and staff, stressing the need for ethical practices in the industry.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, the union acknowledged the rapid increase in radio stations across Oyo State, particularly in Ibadan, and commended media owners for their investments in job creation.
However, it raised concerns over media outfits being established primarily for political interests, often employing unqualified personnel at the expense of trained professionals. The union urged the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the NUJ to enforce strict ethical standards.
On infrastructure, the congress commended both federal and state governments for their ongoing road improvement projects but urged agencies like the Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), and the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) to be more proactive in ensuring road safety.
It also called on the federal government to re-award the recently terminated Oyo-Ogbomoso road contract to a reputable contractor to ensure quality execution and timely completion.
Regarding emergency response, the NUJ urged the Oyo State Government to adequately equip the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for swift and effective disaster management.
The congress also lauded Governor Seyi Makinde’s efforts in healthcare, particularly the enrollment of 10,000 women through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, as well as thousands of pupils across public schools in the state. It described the ongoing health insurance scheme as a positive step in improving public welfare.
On security, the union commended the state government and security agencies for maintaining peace and urged them to strengthen measures to curb criminal activities.
In a show of appreciation, the NUJ acknowledged the philanthropic support of Alhaji Ademola Bankole, journalist and CEO of Carnival Radio, for assisting 15 veteran journalists in the state.
The communiqué was signed by the drafting committee members: Comrade Akeem Abas (Chairman), Comrade Olamide Adeniji (Secretary), and Comrade Dayo Adu (Member).
