The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mallam Alhassan Yahya, has received a congratulatory message from Dr. Gbemiga Bamidele, Convener of the Society for Journalism Enhancement Initiatives (S4JEI), in celebration of the union’s 70th anniversary.
Describing the Platinum Jubilee as a “remarkable milestone,” Dr. Bamidele commended the resilience and global relevance of Nigerian journalists, noting that the profession has remained at the forefront of national development and democratic struggles.
“My pleasure derives from my knowledge of the circumstances of the birth of the Union on March 15, 1955, and its survival for seventy years,” he wrote, adding that the Nigerian press has consistently championed the cause of human dignity, rights, and social welfare.
He traced the roots of the NUJ’s formation to its early pioneers, paying glowing tributes to the founding President Mobolaji Odunewu, the first General Secretary Olu Oyesanya, and nationalists such as Herbert Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose journalistic legacies remain indelible.
“The press was the principal weapon in the fight against British colonialism and native tyranny,” Bamidele emphasized, praising the NUJ for upholding a proud tradition of advocacy and excellence.
He also extended warm congratulations to the NUJ President and leadership, urging them to continue steering the union toward greater relevance in the digital age.
“As you strive to take the Union to an enviable level, please accept my best wishes and regards at all times,” Dr. Bamidele concluded.
