The Northern Youth Network (NYN) says it is mobilising hundreds of young people from the 19 Northern states to participate in the 2025 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The group described the mobilisation as a show of solidarity with efforts to rebuild the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections and a vote of confidence in Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
NYN National Coordinator, Comrade Sulaiman Yakubu, said Governor Makinde represents “competence, transparency and modern leadership,” noting that his administration has recorded notable achievements in infrastructure renewal, fiscal discipline and youth empowerment.
He added that the PDP remains the only political party in Nigeria that has retained its identity since 1999, warning that some politicians who previously benefited from the party are now allegedly working to weaken it for selfish reasons.
“For democracy to thrive, there must be a strong opposition. A one-party system is unhealthy for a diverse country like Nigeria,” the group said. “This is why we are supporting Governor Makinde and other leaders committed to rebuilding the PDP through the National Convention.”
The NYN maintained that the PDP remains the only viable opposition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
The group also cautioned the judiciary against issuing conflicting judgments capable of causing confusion and undermining the country’s democratic stability.
Yakubu noted that the Network operates under the political mentorship of Hon. Shina Abiola Peller, whom he described as a consistent advocate of youth inclusion in governance. He said the group’s participation at the convention demonstrates loyalty to Peller’s ideals and confidence in Makinde’s leadership capacity at the national level.
He reiterated the NYN’s commitment to national unity, inter-regional cooperation and issue-based politics, stressing that Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders who understand governance and the aspirations of its youth population.
As preparations for the PDP National Convention intensify, the group urged youth organisations across the country to avoid political apathy and take active roles in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
