In his New Year message, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
He also called on the federal government to withdraw its current tax bills and prioritize inclusive national dialogue to develop fair and sustainable tax policies.
Titled “In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,” the message highlighted the importance of social dialogue and stakeholder engagement in nation-building. Ajaero reiterated the NLC’s stance on ensuring that governance translates into tangible benefits for citizens, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education, and housing.
The NLC President also criticized the government’s heavy-handed tactics in dealing with trade unions, urging a shift toward peaceful engagement and respect for agreements.
He further advocated for adherence to the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and a wage review to reflect current economic realities.
The NLC is set to host a national dialogue in Ibadan in January 2025, aiming to co-create a new tax framework that aligns with national development goals.
Ajaero underscored the union’s commitment to fostering industrial peace and advancing the rights of workers, emphasizing that collective resolve and inclusivity remain pivotal in driving Nigeria toward progress and prosperity.
