The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Oyo State Council, has rejected the proposed 7.5 per cent health insurance deduction from the salaries of nurses and midwives in the state, citing the prevailing economic hardship facing its members.
The association described the deduction as ill-timed, warning that it would further worsen the financial burden on healthcare workers already grappling with rising living costs.
In a statement jointly signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Adeleke Olugbade Victor, and the State Secretary, Comrade Aina Emmanuel, NANNM maintained that the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme should retain the previously deducted amount without any increase.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Oyo State Government, the association commended Governor ‘Seyi Makinde for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries and ongoing infrastructural development across the state.
However, NANNM appealed to the governor to closely monitor the activities of agencies that may introduce policies capable of placing additional pressure on workers.
The association stressed that the welfare of nurses, midwives, and other public servants should remain a top priority, especially at a time of severe economic challenges.
“Nurses and midwives are key stakeholders in the healthcare system, and any policy that negatively affects their welfare will ultimately impact service delivery,” the association noted.
