Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached by Assembly members amid controversies over financial dealings.
Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, previously Deputy Speaker, has been elected as the new Speaker, and Hon. Fatai Mojeed, formerly Deputy Chief Whip, is now the Deputy Speaker.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, had served as Speaker since June 8, 2015, and was re-elected for a third term in June 2023.
The Lagos State House of Assembly, comprising 40 members representing various constituencies, is responsible for legislative functions in the state.
Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, previously served as Deputy Speaker before her recent election as Speaker.
Hon. Fatai Mojeed, who has now assumed the role of Deputy Speaker, was formerly the Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly.
The assembly sitting took place under tight security, with over 200 heavily armed policemen stationed at the entrance and within the premises of the House of Assembly complex.
