Celebrates Eid-el-Fitr with Soldiers in Igbeti
Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has emphasised the need to prioritise the welfare of military personnel, noting that their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation deserve continuous recognition and support.
The governor made this known on Friday while addressing troops during the Chief of Army Staff Special Sallah Celebration held at the Forward Operating Base, Igbeti, in Olorunsogo Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Governor Makinde commended the officers and men of the Nigerian Army for their dedication to maintaining peace and security in the state, stating that their efforts have significantly contributed to Oyo State’s reputation as one of the safest states in Nigeria.
He noted that the progress recorded in key sectors such as the economy, education, and healthcare is largely attributable to the prevailing security and stability in the state.
“Today marks the end of Ramadan, a period defined by sacrifice. When we speak of sacrifice, our men and women in uniform stand out clearly,” the governor said.
“While many Nigerians are at home celebrating Eid with their families, our troops remain on the frontlines, ensuring the safety of lives and property. This is a profound sacrifice, and we are deeply grateful.
“The peace we enjoy today is a direct result of your commitment. Without security, there can be no meaningful development—no investment, no trade, and no effective education system. We cannot thank you enough for your unwavering service.
“Because you continue to make these sacrifices for us, your welfare must remain a top priority. As you keep us safe, we must ensure that your well-being is adequately taken care of.”
Governor Makinde also commended the Chief of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), and the leadership of the Nigerian Army for implementing policies and programmes aimed at improving troop welfare. He encouraged the troops to remain steadfast in their duties and prayed for their continued protection and that of their families.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by Major General M.D. Shagaya, Commander, Corps of Supply and Transport, praised the discipline, resilience, and professionalism of the troops, noting that their efforts have led to improved security across the operational area.
He also paid tribute to fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation and acknowledged the continued support of the Oyo State Government in enhancing military operations.
In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde for his administration’s consistent support to the military over the past several years. He added that initiatives such as the Sallah celebration serve as morale boosters for troops.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Garrison Commander, 2 Division, Brigadier General A.S. Bugaje; Senior Executive Assistant (General Duties) to the Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal; Chairman/Director-General, Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Hon. Abiodun Oni; the Onigbeti of Igbeti, His Royal Majesty Oba Bashir Olalekan Siyanbola IV; the Asiwaju of Igbeti, Chief Jacob Adetoro; local government chairmen, religious leaders, and other notable personalities.
