Mogaji Joseph Ọlásúnkànmí Tégbè has described the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, as a monarch whose life was defined by exceptional service and an unwavering commitment to the development of Ibadanland.
Tegbe, in a heartfelt tribute, said, “Oba Olakulehin embodied the highest ideals of leadership, learning, and service, leaving an indelible mark on Ibadan’s development. His reign was distinguished by wisdom, peace, and unity.”
A telling example of Oba Olakulehin’s service-minded legacy was his role during his tenure as a top-ranking Ibadan High Chief, when he mobilized efforts for the restoration of the historic Oja’ba Central Mosque, one of the oldest Islamic structures in the city.
Faced with decades of structural decay, the Mosque had become a safety concern and a shadow of its former self. Recognizing its religious, cultural, and historical significance, Chief Olakulehin, alongside other concerned elders, initiated a fundraising and renovation campaign. He not only rallied influential Ibadan indigenes at home and abroad but also personally contributed to the effort, ensuring that the structure was restored to its former glory.
The renovated Mosque, completed before his ascension to the throne, now stands as both a spiritual centre and a symbol of Ibadan’s deep-rooted heritage — a legacy of Oba Olakulehin’s foresight and commitment to cultural preservation.
Tegbe added that the late monarch’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of Ibadan indigenes and admirers of his quiet but impactful leadership. He extended condolences to the Governor of Oyo State, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the entire people of Ibadan.
“May the Almighty grant his soul eternal rest and grant his family and the good people of Ìbàdàn the strength to bear this great loss,” he prayed.
