Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.
In a press statement released on Monday, Kwankwaso said his decision followed careful consideration of the current political landscape in Nigeria, which he noted requires “strategic realignment.”
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he stated.
The former NNPP national leader expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve as its presidential flagbearer in the 2023 elections, describing the decision to leave as a difficult one.
Kwankwaso noted that recent political developments have made it necessary for him to identify with “another political platform” that offers a better opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
He also appreciated the party’s leadership, including National Chairman Ajuri Ahmed, the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement for their loyalty and commitment.
Despite his exit, Kwankwaso called for continued collaboration among political actors in the interest of building a more prosperous Nigeria.
The development is expected to trigger fresh political calculations ahead of future elections, particularly given Kwankwaso’s influence in Kano State and the wider northern region.
