Hundreds of party faithful including former President of Senate, Ken Nnamani, former governor Sullivan Chime, National Chairman of the party in the southeast, Emma Eneukwu, Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, state chairman of the party, Ben Nwoye, Business mogul Baywood Ibeh and others on Saturday scampered to safety as armed thugs disrupted the state congress of All Progressives Congress APC in Enugu.
They chased away committee members and hundreds of party faithful, who gathered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium in Enugu venue for the state congress.
The armed thugs started shooting sporadically into the air, few minutes after the arrival of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and Presidential Assistant on Judiciary Reforms, Juliet Ibekaku,
The hitherto peaceful accreditation that was ongoing was disrupted ,Canopies, chairs and tables put together for the exercise were kicked and turned upside down, even as
Only the prompt intervention of the police saved the members from harm as they were whisked away through the back door to an unknown venue. When the members deserted, the Onyeama faction of the party took over the venue to conduct affairs without the congress committee members, materials and INEC officials, after which Okey Ogbodo was returned as chairman.
Onyeama said of the incident: “This is not what President Buhari came into power for. This is not why he fought elections. He fought for change. We came in for change and the most cardinal thing is to have free and fair elections for the people to speak and it is so sad to Enugu State APC that we cannot hold simple free and fair elections where everybody is included. We have tried and tried. We don’t care who get selected, but let the best person get elected but it is absolutely impossible, because those who are in position said they will not allow free and fair elections. We don’t want a fight but we want the majority will to prevail.”
On her part, Ibekaku vowed that there would not be any congress in the state until election materials were provided. “We want free and fair election. No congress is holding in Enugu State today because the state chairman and the Zonal National Vice Chairman, Emma Eneukwu doesn’t want any election to hold today in Enugu. So there is no congress holding in Enugu today”, she said.
