The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has signed the Kano State Emirate Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024.

The governor in a post on his Facebook wall said “After signing the new Kano emirate council law at Government House, Kano, today. I hereby announce the reinstatement of HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano State.”

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed Kano State Emirate Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024 which favoured reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.

This move follows the abolition of four additional emirates created in 2019 by the previous administration of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The new law, titled ‘The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024’, was passed after scaling third reading before the lawmakers. The bill effectively dissolves the establishment of the additional emirates, restoring the original Kano Emirate system.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II was initially deposed as Emir of Kano in 2019 following a rift with then-Governor Ganduje. The creation of the additional emirates was seen as a move to reduce the power and influence of the Emir of Kano.

The reinstatement of Emir Sanusi II comes after the victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in the last election, who had promised to restore the old Kano Emirate system. The move is seen as a fulfillment of this campaign promise.

With this development, Emir Sanusi II is set to resume his position as the Emir of Kano, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of Kano State.
