 Chairman of Iwajowa Local Government, Hon. Oyewumi Muritala Abiodun, has described the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between nine Nigerian local governments and eleven communes in the Republic of Benin as a milestone in cross-border cooperation.
Chairman of Iwajowa Local Government, Hon. Oyewumi Muritala Abiodun, has described the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between nine Nigerian local governments and eleven communes in the Republic of Benin as a milestone in cross-border cooperation.
The MoU, signed on Monday, August 18, 2025, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, is expected to foster closer ties in the areas of economy, security, social development, and cultural exchange between the two neighbouring countries.
Abiodun, who represented Iwajowa Local Government at the event, said the agreement would bring far-reaching benefits to border communities. According to him, “This momentous event marks a significant step in strengthening the ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. The agreement will bring benefits to our communities, economies, security, and people.”
He expressed appreciation to the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for granting the opportunity for local governments in the state to be part of the historic exercise, noting that Makinde’s leadership continues to open doors for grassroots development.
The Nigerian local governments that signed the agreement include Iwajowa, Itesiwaju, Atisbo, Saki West, Yewa North, Ipokia, Imeko-Afon, Badagry, and Badagry West. Their Beninese counterparts are Pope, Adja-Ouèrè, Kétou, Sakété, Ifangni, Tchaourou, Savè, Ouèssè, Sèmè-Podji, Adjarra, and Avrankou
