The Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Eastern Zone, has raised concerns over an alleged plan by the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Following a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, IYC Eastern Zone Chairman, Ibiso Harry, accused former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating the crisis.

He alleged that Wike, through his allies Amaewhule and Tony Okocha, was behind efforts to remove the governor due to Fubara’s refusal to cede control of the state’s resources.

Harry also condemned a Supreme Court ruling that froze Rivers State’s allocation, attributing the decision to Okocha’s influence. He warned that the ruling would negatively impact the state’s economy and the welfare of civil servants.

“The political crisis in Rivers State has been driven by Wike’s desperation to control the state’s resources, which Governor Fubara has resisted,” Harry stated. He insisted that Fubara must be allowed to complete two terms, like his predecessors, and warned against any impeachment attempt.

The IYC vowed to resist Fubara’s removal by any means necessary, cautioning those involved to prepare for consequences if they proceed with the alleged plot. The group also commended President Bola Tinubu for his intervention and urged further steps to ensure stability.

Additionally, IYC Chairman Emeritus Ibim Ibiwari claimed their investigations had uncovered a plan to impeach the governor, citing statements by Okocha and lawmaker Lolo Opuene as evidence. He emphasized that just as they supported Wike’s re-election in the past, they are ready to defend Fubara’s administration.
