In a major step towards strengthening the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the expansion of GBV desk offices to all police divisions across the country.
Previously limited to zonal and state commands, these specialized units will now be available at the divisional level, ensuring that victims of gender-based violence receive prompt, professional, and specialized attention.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the initiative is aimed at enhancing efficiency, improving service delivery, and ensuring easier access to justice for citizens.
“To support this expansion, the IGP has mandated the appointment of qualified officers as GBV desk officers. These officers will undergo specialized training to equip them with the necessary skills and expertise to handle GBV cases effectively,” the statement reads.
Additionally, the newly appointed desk officers will oversee the Juvenile, Women, and Children (JWC) section in their respective divisions. This integration is designed to provide a holistic approach to handling gender-based violence and related cases, ensuring a supportive environment for victims and facilitating swift justice.
The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens and called on the public to report incidents of violence without fear of discrimination or bias.
With this expansion, the police aim to provide a more accessible and responsive mechanism for addressing GBV, reinforcing their mission to uphold justice and safeguard the rights of vulnerable individuals.
